What We Own or Want to Own

There are a number of ways to leverage Seeking Alpha’s portfolio functionality. This is useful to monitor the investments you own, or the ones you want to own. You can also use it to create temporary portfolio views. I do this when I am helping a friend analyze their investments at another brokerage firm. I can upload a csv file with the ticker symbols from their investment portfolio. This saves time and creates helpful teaching tools. I often see horrendous allocations to bond funds or expense ratios that are astronomical and downright ridiculous.

Creating a Portfolio from Scratch

You can create a portfolio from scratch, adding in ticker symbols that you want to monitor. For example, ETF VYM has a top ten list. I created a portfolio called “VYM-TOP-10” to monitor those stocks. I also created one called “Weekly Dividends” to help me analyze the ETF investments that pay weekly dividends.

Uploading a CSV File

The second way to leverage this tool is to upload a CSV file to Seeking Alpha using the “Create Portfolio” link and then by selecting “Upload CSV.” When you do this you enter a name for the portfolio.

Linking Your Investments to Seeking Alpha

You can also link your brokerage investment accounts to Seeking Alpha. This gives you a wonderful way to examine the quality of your existing investments. So, for example, here are images of the top QUANT investments in my traditional IRA and my ROTH IRA.

Views to Monitor EAI

This tool is also helpful for monitoring potential income. The following image shows the estimated annual income for investments in my ROTH IRA, sorted by most income to least. According to Seeking Alpha, the total estimated annual tax-free income in my ROTH is $89,068.37. The EAI for my traditional IRA is $86,352.69. That is easy income.

Total Returns Are Still Important

Far too many investors have too many dollars invested in bonds. When it comes to total returns, Fidelity Investments helps me monitor our returns. I want our average annualized returns to be 8-10%. I realize that isn’t as good as the 15.64% returns of the S&P 500 or the 15.07% returns of the Dow Jones Total Stock Market Index. At my age I don’t need to chase the top ten investments in the stock market. Those returns are primarily the result of those stocks.

Don’t think the party can go on forever. There will be a major correction, and it will scare many into selling, further compounding the “losses.” You have to have a plan and stick to it.
