Proverbs 19:21 (ESV) “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.”
This blog has a lot to do with planning. But plans must be aligned with God’s purposes and will. It is wise to “Know well the condition of your flocks and pay attention to your herds; for riches are not forever, nor does a crown endure to all generations.” (Proverbs 27:23-24) This paying attention means there will be some planning involved. But ultimately the focus should not be on the possessions but on a Person. Even “your” flocks and “your” herds are not really yours. You have possession, but you don’t have ownership. Therefore, your planning efforts should remember that.
The Bible has quite a bit to say about good and bad plans. God even has good plans and purposes that are for our good. It is impossible to stop or circumvent or supplant His plans. God is therefore, by his very nature, opposed to and hates certain plans. Proverbs 6:16-19 (ESV) says God hates seven things. One of them is “a heart that devised wicked plans.” Notice that before the plan can be carried out, God is aware of the plan and the intentions.
The alternative good plan of a man or woman is also noticed by God. Proverbs 21:5 (ESV) says “The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.” Abundance comes from God’s hands and for His sovereign and loving purposes. In fact, you should take great comfort in this Psalm: 33:11 “The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of his heart to all generations.”
