Proverbs 19:19 (ESV) Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future.”

Proverbs 1:5 (ESV) “Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance.”

Proverbs 12:15 (ESV) “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.”

There are many voices but not as many ears in our western culture. The scriptures often instruct us to be listening. Listening is a critical skill. Perhaps this skill and behavior is repeated so often because we have big mouths and ears that are shut.

Ultimately, there is one person you dare not ignore. God the Father had an interesting command for the disciples on the Mount of Transfiguration. Listen to my Son! How can you do that? Read the scriptures.

Matthew 17:5 “He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.’”

If you want to be a better listener, then you should practice effective listening disciplines. This, by the way, is a good way to have your words be few. You cannot listen well and talk at the same time.
