Exploring the Virtual Report

In our world of computers and connected devices, many things are “virtual.” There are virtual reality (VR) environments, social media platforms where many of my “friends” are really virtual acquaintances, virtual meetings (I have a Zoom subscription that I used yesterday to have a meeting with one of our nephews), and businesses that I never go to except virtually: Amazon, Wal-Mart, and PureTalk. I have a virtual library of theology-centric books from Logos (Pro Subscription) on my computer that contains 1,968 resources that don’t appear on the wooden shelves of our home bookcases.

Many of the cover pictures I create for my blog use a virtual photo creation tool on ChatGPT. That includes this one of me posing as a dock worker in a shipyard. I use a phrase like this to create the image: “Create a landscape picture of Wayne Winquist looking at a ocean shipping vessel from the dock. Have Wayne wearing clothing appropriate for a dock worker.”

Skepticism Is Not Bad

There should be some skepticism when it comes to things that are virtual, simulated or computer-generated. The results are only as good as two things: 1) The data being used to provide the answers and 2) The biases or skills of the programmers who developed the solution.

Nevertheless, there are times when virtual research can expedite a decision without digging through a ton of paper or web content. One such virtual tool is available for many (but not all) investments I research on Seeking Alpha.

Global Ship Lease as an Example

FIRST PAGE: HIGHLIGHTS AND COMPANY DESCRIPTION

The first page of the virtual report focuses on the company’s market capitalization, EPS Growth (FWD), P/E (FWD), Industry classification (Marine Transportation), Dividend Yield (FWD), Dividend Frequency, Ex-Dividend Date (02/24/26), and the annual dividend payout ($2.50). Also included is a full description of the company.

COMPETITORS AND UNIQUE VALUE

Global Ship Lease faces competition from several notable companies in the containership leasing industry. The Seeking Alpha report shows only one.

SEEKING ALPHA QUANT RATING EXPLANATION

GSL is rated Buy. The company showcases a compelling mix of factors, including strong valuation, excellent profitability, and robust stock momentum, though growth metrics present a mixed picture. No significant changes in earnings revisions were observed. Growth of the business is probably fairly limited. – Seeking Alpha Virtual Report

POSITIVES RAISED BY ANALYSTS ON SEEKING ALPHA

The company has maintained high profitability and cash flow, with nearly $2 billion in contracted revenue, supporting a strong balance sheet and leveraged growth opportunities in world trade volumes.”

“Global Ship Lease has a significant contract backlog of $1.92 billion, providing a stable revenue stream and ensuring high dividend safety through 2026. The company benefits from a conservative price target of $46.49, which implies substantial upside potential.” – Seeking Alpha Virtual Report

CONCERNS RAISED BY ANALYSTS ON SEEKING ALPHA

Every investment has risks. Therefore it is good to buy an investment knowing the risk factors.

“Global Ship Lease faces risks associated with its aging fleet, as many vessels will be over 20 years old by the time current contracts end, necessitating costly fleet renewals.” – Seeking Alpha Virtual Report

A Second Opinion

Before I had a Seeking Alpha subscription I used Weiss Ratings. Weiss still offers some information without a subscription, so I sometimes look at the Weiss Rating for an investment.

Conclusion

I still like GSL as an investment, but it might not be right for you. Although I currently own 100 shares of GSL, I lost all of my shares due to covered call options trading. The good news is that I made a profit on my shares, made an additional $3,658 trading options on our shares and an additional $10,092 in dividend income from June 2021 through today. Sadly, my 1,700 shares in my ROTH IRA were called in August 2025. I bought 100 shares at $34.70, and I trade options contracts on those shares as well.

If you are interested in trading options, GSL is one company you might want to add to your buy list.
