Short and Sweet for Global Ship Lease

This post will be short and sweet. Cindie and I hold 1,900 shares of GSL. It wasn’t that long ago that GSL shares were trading below $18 per share. It looks like they could easily hit $24.75 today. Before you get too excited, bear in mind that this is a very small company and marine transportation can give you a wild ride.

I do trade covered call options on my GSL shares. So far this year Cindie and I have made $1,490 trading options on our shares. In 2024 I only made $413 trading options on my ROTH shares.

Look at Dividends and 10-Year Total Returns

Global Ship Lease is not one of our better investments. But this dividend increase was a nice surprise. If you look at total 10-year returns you will see that they are a negative 22%. Timing, however, is everything. I purchased my first set of shares in 2021. I like the dividend payout ratio. It is 17.27%.

Company Profile

Global Ship Lease, Inc., together with its subsidiaries, engages in owning and chartering of containerships under fixed-rate charters to container shipping companies worldwide. As of March 10, 2025, it owned 70 mid-sized and smaller containerships, ranging from 2,207 to 11,040 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU), with an aggregate capacity of 404,681 TEU. The company was formerly known as Marathon Acquisition Corp. and changed its name to Global Ship Lease, Inc. in August 2008. Global Ship Lease, Inc. was founded in 2007 and is based in Athens, Greece.

Recommendation

There are only two other marine transportation companies with higher QUANT ratings. I still like GSL, but I cannot say that this is your best investment opportunity if you want to buy shares. If you do want to diversify into this industrial, start small. Also: learn to trade covered calls. That can increase your investment income and your ROI improves as a result of that type of investment skill.
