Identity Thieves

There are so many clever ways that thieves try to steal. Some look for an open garage door, others look for a dark corner where a window can be broken. Others don’t even show up because they can reach into your world from their computer.
There are ways to make it more difficult from someone to enter your home or apartment. Most of us take at least some precautions. There are also ways to increase the protection you need when it comes to your Social Security number and your income tax filing. Even if you have a tax professional, you should be on guard.
You Can Get an identity protection PIN (IP PIN)
“An identity protection PIN (IP PIN) is a six-digit number that prevents someone else from filing a tax return using your Social Security number (SSN) or individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN). The IP PIN is known only to you and the IRS. It helps us verify your identity when you file your electronic or paper tax return. Even though you may not have a filing requirement, an IP PIN still protects your account.” SOURCE: IRS

A Helpful Video
The IRS has a helpful YouTube video to help explain the IPPIN solution. Here is a LINK.
ID.me
I have already set up an ID.me account with a secure password. It is needed for you to be able to create an identity protection PIN. Part of the protection includes biometric information so that the government can verify your identity. They send a link to your phone so that you can have a live picture of you taken which confirms your identity.

BIOMETRIC INFORMATION PRIVACY STATEMENT
“ID.me will not sell, rent, or trade your Biometric Information, and after verification you may request we delete your Biometric Information. Your Biometric Information will only be used by ID.me to verify your identity in accordance with the guidelines published by the National Institute for Standards and Technology or as required for the prevention of fraud. ID.me will transfer your Biometric Information to our third party partners only when required by a subpoena, warrant, or other court ordered legal action.” Source: ID.me

Wait Until January 6, 2025
When I tried to get my 2025 PIN I learned near the end of the process that the IP PIN service is unavailable due to scheduled maintenance. That doesn’t prevent you from getting signed up on ID.me, but you won’t be able to get your PIN until January 6.

How to get an IP PIN
“The fastest way to receive an IP PIN is to request one through your Online Account. If you don’t already have an account on IRS.gov, you must register to validate your identity.
Spouses and dependents are eligible for an IP PIN if they can pass the identity verification process.
Once you have opted in and obtained an IP PIN online, you will need to retrieve your IP PIN online each calendar year as a CP01A Notice will not be mailed.
The IP PIN is generally available in your online account starting in mid-January through mid-November. Select the button to get started.”
